Huntington’s and Me

Huntington’s and Me

A Guide for Young People

Young people affected by Huntington’s need to have correct and up to date information as early as possible young people want to know the truth and this must be provided in such a way that it is informative and factual,as well as supportive. With predictive testing available to those eighteen and over, the young must have this information early so that they have time to consider the implications of testing, not only on themselves, but also their family and friends.

This books provides the latest information about HD and offers strategies for coping with the immediate and long-term challenges. It is soundly based on the experiences of young people themselves. Some have just learned that HD is in their family, others are considering predictive testing them selves. Some have already experienced the loss of a parent.

The Book shows that the experience of coping with HD is not all negative. Young People with HD families gain strength and courage. They learn to face the present and future with love, acceptance, compassion and hope. This book is an essential guide for that journey for both young people and adults.

Lilco & His Mommy

Lilco & His Mommy

by Gabrielle Hamilton

Description
Lilco’s mom teaches her son that the special love she has for him is not restricted by the limitations of her physical illness. Lilco grows both with and without his mother into an adult who is happy, confident and successful because he knows that he was loved dearly by this very important person.

About the Author
Gabrielle Hamilton is a licensed clinical social worker in New York State. In addition to 15 years of work with children and parents Gabrielle has also had the privilege of raising her own 8-year-old son, Teddy. As a mother at-risk for Huntington's disease (a degenerative neurological illness), Gabrielle wrote the story of Lilco as a way to teach her son about the disease. And, as a clinical social worker Gabrielle wanted the story to illustrate to Teddy how much she loved him and encourage him in the future in the event that she was not able to express those feelings herself. Gabrielle has written much on the subject of Huntington’s. In 1998 she published an article entitled “Positively Testing” in the social work journal Families and Society. She also published many articles in the Greater NY/LI Chapter of HDSA’s newsletter and the National organization's newsletter as well. And, in 1997 Gabrielle's poems were also included in a book of essays and poems entitled Faces of Huntington's.
